Let Them Live On

The Doors were undoubtedly one of the most innovative and at the same time most radical bands of the 60s. The Backdoors are Hamburg's very own and fabulous Doors cover band that manage to revive the spirit of their idols' music. They deliver the typical Doors sound, unobtrusively and as precisely as a Swiss-made clockwork. Originally only assembled for a birthday party, their gig was received so well that they decided to continue as a fully-fledged band.

The Doors waren zweifellos eine der innovativsten und gleichzeitig radikalsten Bands der 60-er Jahre. Die Backdoors sind Hamburgs ganz eigene, großartige Doors Coverband, die es schafft, den Geist der Musik ihrer Idole wieder zu beleben. Sie bringen den typischen Doors-Sound, unaufdringlich und so präzise wie eine Schweizer Uhr. Ursprünglich hatten sie sich nur für eine Geburtstagsparty zusammengetan, doch dann wurde ihr Gig so gut aufgenommen, dass sie beschlossen, als richtige Band weiterzumachen.

The Hamburg Express talked to Julia Voigt, 26 year old bass player and band manager. She explains why the music of The Doors will abide.

Der Hamburg Express sprach mit Julia Voigt, der 26-jährigen Bass-Spielerin und Bandmanagerin. Sie erklärt, warum die Musik der Doors fortbestehen wird.

T.H.E.: Julia, what is your musical background?

T.H.E.: Julia, was ist dein musikalischer Hintergrund?

JV: My musical background is not like you would expect. I grew up with ultra conservative German schlager music, which my mum used to listen to all the time. Later I listened to teen pop. At 14 I stopped listening to chart music, because to me that kind of music didn't appear to be honest enough. I thought anyone can sing to a machine. I had a guitar and wanted to MAKE music myself! My neighbours then introduced me to the music of the 60s and 70s. But they were rather fans of folk and country like Neil Young, CCR and so on. At that time I had been playing the guitar for two years so I felt I could kind of "join in the conversation".

JV: Mein musikalischer Hintergrund ist nicht so wie man es erwarten würde. Ich bin mit ultrakonservativer deutscher Schlagermusik aufgewachsen, die meine Mutter immer hörte. Später habe ich Teen-Pop gehört. Mit 14 hörte ich damit auf, Musik aus den Charts zu hören, weil mir diese Art Musik nicht ehrlich genug erschien. Ich dachte, jeder kann zu einer Maschine singen. Ich hatte eine Gitarre und wollte selbst Musik MACHEN! Meine Nachbarn führten mich in die Musik der 60-er und 70-er Jahre ein. Aber sie waren eher Fans von Folk und Country wie Neil Young, CCR und so weiter. Zu der Zeit spielte ich seit zwei Jahren Gitarre und so hatte ich das Gefühl, ich könnte sozusagen „mitreden“.

T.H.E.: With your 26 years of age you're the youngest in the band. How did you become a part of The Doors project?

T.H.E.: Mit deinen 26 Jahren bist du die Jüngste in der Band. Wie wurdest du Teil des Doors-Projekts?

JV: They simply asked me if I wanted to join the band. At that time I wasn't really a Doors fan. I was aware of them and their music but that was about it. Nowadays it's different. I read a lot about that era and the music scene in L.A. at that time. I found it all very interesting. When I started to play The Doors I somehow got infected by their music as well as by the enthusiasm of my band mates. I think The Doors' lyrics are wonderful and their unique sound could never be recreated or copied like this again. It's amazing how many people really like The Doors and come to our concerts. Some of them really think we are The Doors reincarnated! I doubt that we would ever have reached this level of popularity by covering any other band.

JV: Sie haben mich einfach gefragt, ob ich bei der Band mitmachen wollte. Damals war ich nicht wirklich ein Doors-Fan. Ich kannte sie und ihre Musik, aber das war es. Heute ist das anders. Ich lese viel über die Ära und die Musikszene in L.A. zu der Zeit. Ich finde das alles sehr interessant. Als ich anfing, The Doors zu spielen, wurde ich irgendwie durch ihre Musik und die Begeisterung der anderen Bandmitglieder infiziert. Ich denke, die Songtexte der Doors sind wundervoll und ihr einzigartiger Sound wurde nie wieder erschaffen oder kopiert. Es ist erstaunlich, wie viele Leute die Doors mögen und zu unseren Konzerten kommen. Einige denken wirklich wir sind die wiedergeborenen Doors! Ich bezweifle, dass wir dieses Maß an Popularität jemals erreicht hätten, wenn wir eine andere Band gecovert hätten.

T.H.E.: How come the music of The Doors is still popular with the young people of today? Of all bands, why The Doors?

T.H.E.: Wie kommt es, dass die Musik der Doors bei jungen Leuten heute immer noch beliebt ist? Von allen Bands, warum die Doors?

JV: My explanation is this: Young people nowadays experience an enormous superficiality in their lives. Styling (whatever that entails) and parties seem to have become a major concern. However, there seem to be kids out there that don't share that attitude of indifference. They crave something that is not superficial. They listen to music they can identify with which inevitably leads them to the music of the revolutionary 60s and to The Doors. The music back then represented a form of ,expressing an attitude towards life. This attitude hasn't changed in 40 years. The Doors stand for a world in which people still thought for themselves and feelings did matter. Jim Morrison was a very avid reader which also shows in his lyrics. He stood out of the cultural uniformity. The music of The Doors is hand made and exceptionally interesting. You don't find that anymore today. So, you cannot but love their music, no matter how old you are.

JV: Das ist meine Erklärung: Junge Leute erleben heute in ihren Leben eine enorme Oberflächlichkeit. Styling (was immer das zur Folge hat) und Partys scheinen eine wichtige Angelegenheit geworden zu sein. Es scheint jedoch Kids da draußen zu geben, die diese gleichgültige Haltung nicht teilen. Sie sehnen sich nach etwas, das nicht oberflächlich ist. Sie hören Musik, mit der sie sich identifizieren können, und das führt sie unausweichlich zu der Musik der revolutionären 60-er Jahre und zu den Doors. Die Musik stand damals für den Ausdruck einer Lebenseinstellung. Diese Einstellung hat sich in 40 Jahren nicht geändert. Die Doors stehen für eine Welt, in der Menschen noch selbst dachten und Gefühle etwas bedeuteten. Jim Morrison war ein sehr begieriger Leser, was sich auch an seinen Texten zeigt. Er setzte sich von der kulturellen Einförmigkeit ab. Die Musik der Doors ist von Hand gemacht und außerordentlich interessant. Das findet man heute nicht mehr. Daher kann man gar nicht anders als ihre Musik zu lieben, ganz egal wie alt man ist.

T.H.E.: How many gigs do you play per year and where?

T.H.E.: Wieviele Konzerte gebt ihr pro Jahr und wo?

JV: We usually do two to three gigs per year at the Logo and have regular appearances at the Marktlöcke. I just wished they would pay us more. Other than that it depends on how many times we are being booked. We even performed at a wedding once!

JV: Normalerweise geben wir zwei oder drei Gigs pro Jahr im Logo und treten regelmäßig in der Marktlöcke auf. Ich wünschte nur, sie würden uns mehr zahlen. Abgesehen davon kommt es darauf an, wie häufig wir gebucht werden. Wir sind sogar schon bei einer Hochzeit aufgetreten!

T.H.E.: Next year we will mark the 35th anniversary of Jim Morrison's death. Are you planning a special event?

T.H.E.: Nächstes Jahr wird der 35. Todestag von Jim Morrison begangen. Plant ihr einen speziellen Event dazu?

JV: We have nothing specific planned yet but we will see. Stay tuned!

J.V. Wir haben noch nichts Spezielles geplant, aber wir werden sehen. Bleibt dran!

T.H.E.: Where are you going musically? Any plans for the future?

T.H.E.: In welche Richtung wirst du musikalisch gehen? Welche Pläne hast du für die Zukunft?

JV: I don't have a plan per se. I am involved in various projects. I play in a jazz band, in a rock 'n' roll band and in a two-girls-and-a-guitar-band. I'm quite satisfied with the way things are working out right now. Furthermore I play the violin a lot and I want to find a way to include them in one of my next projects. But first I should really complete my university degree.

JV: Ich habe keinen bestimmten Plan. Ich bin in mehreren Projekten dabei. Ich spiele in einer Jazz Band, einer Rock ‚n’ Roll Band und einer Zwei-Mädchen-und-eine-Gitarre-Band. Ich bin ziemlich zufrieden damit, wie die Dinge im Moment laufen. Außerdem spiele ich viel Geige und möchte einen Weg finden, das in einem meiner nächsten Projekte zu integrieren. Aber vorher sollte ich wirklich meinen Abschluss an der Uni machen.
